Ultimate Moving Checklist for Indian Families

Moving in India isn't just about boxes — it's gas connection transfers, PAN/Aadhaar address updates, school transfer certificates, society NOCs, and a hundred other things. This 8-week checklist makes sure nothing slips.

8-Week Moving Plan

Week 8 (2 months before move)

• ☐ Decide move date + buffer (avoid 1st & last 3 days of month)
• ☐ Get 3 quotes from packers (verified GSTIN + IBA approved)
• ☐ Decide what to sell, donate, throw, take
• ☐ Start home insurance (existing) review for transit period
• ☐ Inform school about transfer 2 months ahead (TC takes 3-4 weeks)
• ☐ Begin decluttering (sell on OLX, donate to Goonj)

Week 6

• ☐ Book the mover (deposit only, never full upfront)
• ☐ Apply for school Transfer Certificate (TC)
• ☐ Update PAN address (online via NSDL)
• ☐ Update Aadhaar address (online via UIDAI)
• ☐ Inform employer (if eligible for relocation reimbursement)
• ☐ Notify society about move date — request NOC

Week 4

• ☐ Apply for new school admission (destination city)
• ☐ Transfer LPG gas connection (via service provider — IGL/MGL/HPCL)
• ☐ Disconnect electricity at old address (final bill payment)
• ☐ Forward postal mail (Indian Post mail forwarding service ₹350/3 months)
• ☐ Cancel old society maintenance from move date
• ☐ Bank: update address (visit branch with new address proof)

Week 3

• ☐ Buy packing supplies if self-packing
• ☐ Begin packing rarely-used items (festival decor, off-season clothes)
• ☐ Update online services: Amazon, Flipkart, Zomato, Swiggy default address
• ☐ Notify GP doctor + collect family medical records
• ☐ Get pet vaccination + travel certificates if applicable

Week 2

• ☐ Do a video inventory of all items (proof for insurance claim)
• ☐ Confirm pickup time + crew strength with mover
• ☐ Pack daily-use clothes for 5 days separately
• ☐ Withdraw cash + emergency contacts list
• ☐ Confirm new home is keys-in-hand on arrival day
• ☐ Switch off geyser/AC 24 hrs before move

Week 1 (move week)

• ☐ Pack remaining boxes
• ☐ Defrost fridge 12-24 hrs before move
• ☐ Final cleaning of old home (or hire cleaner)
• ☐ Society NOC final pickup
• ☐ Old home keys hand over to landlord/society

Move Day

• ☐ Be present for full inventory check (sign mover's inventory sheet)
• ☐ Photograph any pre-existing damage
• ☐ Get GPS tracking link from mover
• ☐ Pay 70% on pickup, 30% on delivery
• ☐ Lock and seal all boxes

Day-1 in New Home

• ☐ Re-photograph any new damage on delivery (within 24 hrs)
• ☐ Verify inventory count matches pickup sheet
• ☐ Activate new gas connection
• ☐ Notify school of arrival date
• ☐ Update RTO for vehicle if state changed
• ☐ Submit new address to PF/employer for paperwork
